July 6
Today I got up around 8:00, and packed up my bags. I made oatmeal for breakfast, then checked out and waited in the lobby around 9:30. It didn't take too long until my UC driver arrived, helped me with my bags, and took me to the UC campus. We got my paperwork with the residence office taken care of, then he drove my bags down to my dorm, and helped me get them into my room. Everything about my room and my dorm building (Arscott house) say the same thing: cedarcrest. For one thing, this building looks the most like cedarcrest out of all of them. Also, exactly like freshman year when I lived in cedarcrest, it is the farthest dorm away from any of the academic buildings on campus. I live on the third floor, and the general overall apperance, inside and out, reminds me of cedarcrest. My room has stained carpeting (but it does have carpeting!), and only one closet door, plus my one bed leg is bent. Oh well. It'll be cool being with regular Aussie students instead of just a bunch international kids. Plus I don't mind the walk.
I explored campus a little, found the library, the international office, and the gym. I guess it'll be like $120 if I want to buy a gym membership, which isn't too bad I guess, when compared to the price for the Kelchner fitness center fee at Mansfield. The weightroom looked pretty nice, and there were several tradmills there as well.
After exploring I came back to my dorm, changed into some running clothes (a t-shirt and shorts, since it's in the 50s again today), and went for a run. I ran down around the lake which is a block from campus, and past a big mall (which is about 3 blocks from campus), and then turned around and came back. I ran for about 27-30 minutes in all, and was kinda tired by the end. I guess my 20-minute run yesterday kinda exhausted my old running energy reserves. I need to get back in shape soon. :) Oh! I almost forgot! I saw two big Grey Kangaroos eating and hopping around in some grass near some trees on my way back on my run. It was so cool to actually see some in real life finally! :)
The rest of the evening I've been in my dorm. I unpacked, ate some supper, and met a kid from down the hall. His name is Sam, and he's from Sydney. He got a haircut today, and was highlighting his hair. He was trying to do it by himself, but he had never done it before, so I took my expertise and helped him pull his hair through the showercap, and then he did the rest. It turned out pretty good. I talked to him a little bit about campus, and living in the dorms, and all that sort of stuff. It's kinda nice to have someone who's lived here for a little while help out with answering some questions. This evening he stopped back by again and asked me if I wanted to go down to Subway and get something to eat. I went along and one of his friends was working, and I think he kinda broke the rules (sshhhhh!), but I ended up getting my 6-inch sub for free. And Sam got his sub at a discount. :)
