July 4th!

WellA view of the lake with two masked lapwings on shore, it's July 4th here in Aussie, but it's still July 3rd back home. muahahaha. Today I killed time walking around, including for a good 3-4 hours in Commonwealth Park. On my way back I stopped breifly at the National Gallery and looked at a few art exhibits. In the park I saw a pA weird art exhibit that consisted of sculptures of heads above the water and surrounded by fog that was produced by fog machines.air of ravens carrying sticks, so I guess they're going to start nesting soon. Spring is fast approacing! :) I saw a few new birds on my walk today, including 3 red wattlebirds (brown streaky birds with little red wattles, and a yellow patch on their bellies... long tails and similar proportions, but somewhat larger A female Australian king parrot eating a plantthan a blue jay), 3 white-plumed honeyeaters (about oriole-sized, yellow-green with a white patch on the side of their neck/face. They like to hang upside down and drink from little flowers in this one bush), 3 New Holland honeyeaters (black and white and yellow all over), and The white-faced heron that I photographed through my binoculars!a white-faced heron. I walkd about 3 miles or so all together, and stopped by the national gallery. There were some interesting displays of art at this gallery, altough not all of it piqued my interest.

I switched rooms in the hostel today. My window opens in this room, which is nice. The TV doesn't work though, which is kind of a bummAnother view across the lake with the parliament house (the thing with the pointy roof thing) er. The hostel is getting kinda old. I had to switch rooms because this big group of like 10- to 12-year-olds came in today, and they have enjoyed being loud and obnoxious all over the hostel.

I looked online at what it would cost to go to New Zealand. I might be able to get some pretty cheap/free housing if I ended up staying with Ed and Charlotte, and I could get a round-trip ticket from Aussie for $315. Not too bad. I'll have to see if it will work out for after the semester is over or not. It's definitely worth keeping in mind -- it's not every day I'll have the opportunity to visit New Zealand. Check out the sporty Ford Falcon pickup car/truck. There are a lot of these and other similar car-trucks around in Caberra. It seems like it would be something they could sell a lot of back in the US...

Another view of the lake with the National Carilion (the big building)Apparently this is some sort of monument that America gave to Australia. It's pretty much a big eagle on top of a stick.A pair of Australian wood ducks relaxing next to the water
