June 28, 2006 - the shortest day of my life!
Today was the shortest day of my life. Literally. I'm not sure exactly how short it was, but it occurred entirely during the duration of a 12.5 hour flight, and my best guess is that June 28th was about 7 hours. I took off from LAX closer to 11:00pm on June 27th, and 12.5 hours later landed at 6:00am on June 29th in Auckland, New Zealand.
I got to sit beside a freshly graduated college student, and his still-in-college girlfriend, Ed and Charlotte, from Richmond, VA, during this flight. Ed was funny and talked a lot to the flight attendants about soccer/football, partying, and other fun topics. It turns out in New Zealand it's football, but in Australia it's soccer. Weird. It also turns out that Ed obtained a work visa for New Zealand, and plans on working for 6 months while his girlfriend studys abroad at a university in the same town. We all agreed that if we were asleep when they brought out supper, we would wake each other up to eat. I thought I would be the first one out, but it turns out I was still barely awake when supper came around about an hour after takeoff, and I had to wake Ed and Charlotte up. Supper was excellent: I had penne pasta with mushroom sauce, in addition to various other scrumptious foods. After supper we all went to sleep.
I woke up the first time about 2 hours after I had gone to sleep, and my butt was completely numb. I guess I wasn't sitting in a very good position for those two hours. I got up and walked around for about 5 minutes, then went back to my seat. It turns out the flight crew had brought us each a "snack bag" and placed it on our trays so that we could eat snacks at our leisure. The snack bag included a variety of good things including a bottle of water and some candy, among other healthier foods. In the morning we were served breakfast again before landing, and it was also very good. Quantas airways had some of the best airplane food I've ever eaten -- and included vegetarian options! I ended up sleeping about 7 hours in all on the flight, waking up every 1-2 hours to stretch and move around a bit. By the time we touched town in New Zealand, I had slept through June 28th.
